Supporting Our Team: Partnering with Open Doors Open Minds.

At Elivate, we believe that when you look after your team, they will look after you. This isn’t just about the worksite; it’s about the whole person, and that includes mental health.

That’s why Mark, our founder and director, has brought in the charity Open Doors Open Minds to support our team. Founded by Scott Allan and Gareth Evans-Parry, the charity helps people facing mental health struggles and breaks down the barriers that often stop people from reaching out.

The Story Behind the Charity

Gareth and Scott first met working the doors of pubs and clubs in Reading, Berkshire. In that environment, they saw a side of life most of us don’t – often violent, always high-pressure. When Scott experienced a mental health crisis in his own family, he found there were few places to turn for specialist support. Out of that experience came Open Doors Open Minds.

One of their core focuses is male-led industries where workers are expected to be “tough”, and construction is among the hardest hit.

The statistics are sobering. Around 75% of suicides in the UK are men, and every 20 minutes a man dies by suicide. Within construction, male suicides accounted for around 500 deaths in 2021, and the figure remains stubbornly high. It’s often quoted that suicide rates in construction are three times higher than the national average, with construction workers four times more likely to die by suicide. The pressures are many: long hours, tight deadlines, financial strains, the feeling of being easily replaced, and the stigma of speaking up.

How the Partnership Works

Open Doors Open Minds offers companies a monthly package where employees can talk confidentially and anonymously with Gareth or Scott. Each month, the company receives a report highlighting any workplace trends that may need attention – without identifying anyone personally. It’s a way to surface issues and provide help without fear or stigma.

Mark felt this was vital for Elivate, and we’ve now incorporated a monthly support package for our team.

On Thursday 4 September, we hired a room at Sonning Golf Club so Gareth and Scott could speak with the Elivate team, share their stories, and explain how support is available. A breakout room was set up so anyone could talk to them privately and anonymously.

It was understandably an emotional afternoon. Afterwards, the team decompressed together with a round of golf – refreshed for the next day’s work and reassured that mental and emotional support is there when it’s needed.

Looking Ahead

For us at Elivate, this partnership is about more than ticking a box. It’s about creating an environment where our team knows they are valued, supported, and never alone. Construction is a tough industry, but no one should feel they have to carry the weight by themselves.
